Moldova's EU Accession Path: Challenges and Opportunities Explored at Academy of Sciences Round Table
CHIȘINĂU, Moldova – December 5, 2024 – Leading researchers, academics, and members of the scientific community convened at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (AȘM) on Thursday for a round table discussion titled "The Republic of Moldova between Challenges and Opportunities: Security and Development in the Context of EU Accession." Organized by the Section of Social, Economic, Humanistic and Arts Sciences of AȘM, the event provided a platform for in-depth analysis of Moldova's current socio-economic landscape in light of its pursuit of EU membership.
The round table focused on critical issues facing Moldova, including economic challenges, demographic shifts, energy security, and the implications of the ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine. Participants analyzed these complex challenges through the lens of both the opportunities presented by EU accession and the inherent difficulties of navigating a volatile geopolitical and economic climate.
"This is an opportunity to discuss major issues that concern us all, that concern the whole society," stated an AȘM representative during the opening remarks. "We have invited the best experts available to ensure a scientific approach to these critical topics."
The discussion emphasized the importance of evidence-based decision-making in building public trust in governance. A participant highlighted the connection between informed policy and public confidence, noting, "The degree of trust in governance depends on decisions being made on the basis of evidence, meaning on the results of thorough research."
The round table addressed the opportunities presented by EU integration, including increased employment, better wages, expanded trade, greater investment, and strengthened democracy and human rights. However, the discussion also acknowledged the significant challenges ahead.
"The Republic of Moldova has a small economy, open to all vulnerabilities, both internal and external," stated a leading academic. "We need a functioning market economy that can cope with new competitive pressures in a new competitive environment."
Demographic changes and migration were identified as significant concerns. One expert observed that migration in Moldova “has already reached a critical level that affects the social and economic security of the country.” The discussion explored the implications of a shrinking workforce, declining birth rates, and an aging population. Solutions proposed included creating quality, well-paid jobs and implementing national programs to encourage active participation in the workforce by those of retirement age.
Energy security was another key focus, with experts acknowledging the "normality" of recent energy crises and anticipating further challenges this winter. The ongoing need to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on external suppliers was underscored.
The round table concluded with a call for continued efforts to promote European values and inform the public about the opportunities and challenges associated with EU accession. A speaker emphasized, "It would be a big mistake not to capitalize on this opportunity... We must not lose confidence and do everything possible to make this integration a reality."
The Academy of Sciences of Moldova remains committed to fostering dialogue and research on critical issues facing the nation as it progresses on its path towards EU membership.
